Nikki Stearman, Senior Producer at digital agency Yoomee, talks about how you can make a new website out of only postcards and pens.
I work for Yoomee, a digital agency that helps charities and nonprofits build new online services. We’ve been working closely with the mhabitat team to create a new site that will be the ‘go to place for mental health services in Leeds.’
One of the exciting ways we are working together is to involve people in every stage of the process; from generating ideas, design and testing through lots of different workshops.
One of our challenges is to make sense of all the rich, engaging content we plan to have on the website. We use postcards to help us. We call this a card sorting workshop!
Back in November Yoomee ran a series of card sorting workshops which were great fun and an effective way of figuring out a meaningful sitemap for the new portal that makes sense to everyone. Topics were written on postcards and people attending the workshop were asked to organise them into a logical structure; explaining their thoughts and concerns along the way.
Not being able to find what you’re looking for is a common complaint with websites. By asking everyone to group content in a way that makes sense to them, we can be confident that they, and other people, will be able to find it in a place they expect when we build the website!
We’ve loved working with everyone who has been involved in workshops so far. Involving people who’ll use the website from the beginning really helps it be the best it can be.
We look forward to many more workshops when we come to build the website in the New Year. Look out for opportunities to join us.
